 Event Highlights

On the afternoon of June 13, 2025, Yewen Renyi reported live from the launch of Shanghai Health Report, Issue 5, at Shanghai Book City. The event was hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, Shanghai Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Committee Office. Organized by the Shanghai Health Promotion Center and Shanghai Health Channel, with support from Shanghai Media Group’s Famous Doctors, the event focused on "health secrets" from ICH, aiming to create a one-stop health education brand for Shanghai residents and integrate traditional wellness wisdom into daily life.

Ding Yuan, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Health Promotion Center, served as the host, introducing the event’s theme and background. She emphasized that Shanghai Health Report was designed to align with China’s Healthy Cities initiative and deepen Shanghai’s health promotion efforts, making health education "informative, practical, refined, and engaging" while ensuring it remains "accessible, visible, learnable, and ever-renewing" to enhance public health literacy.

Coinciding with the upcoming Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, the event featured four inheritors of national-level ICH projects:

    1. Zhan Hongsheng – Inheritor of Shi’s Traumatology Therapy, renowned TCM expert, and chief specialist at Shuguang Hospital, Shanghai University of TCM.

    2. Sun Wuquan – Inheritor of Ding’s Massage Therapy and director of the Tuina Department at Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.

   3. Wang Chen – Inheritor of Gu’s Surgical Therapy and leading expert in proctology at Longhua Hospital, Shanghai University of TCM.

    4. Yan Weibing – Inheritor of Ancient Yijinjing (Muscle-Tendon Change Classic) 12 Postures and director of the Shanghai Institute of Traditional Daoyin Medicine.

Deputy Director Ding also recommended Farmer Paintings for Health: Illustrating a New Vision for Well-Being, a gold-medal winner at the 3rd Shanghai Health Science Popularization Competition. The book merges Jinshan farmer paintings—a Shanghai ICH craft—with health education, showcasing the unique charm of blending tradition with modern wellness.

 Expert Insights

    1. The Truth About Bone Setting

Zhan Hongsheng clarified misconceptions about TCM bone setting, distinguishing between bone reduction (for fractures/dislocations) and bone adjustment (for chronic musculoskeletal strain). He warned against misleading online videos, stressing that professional techniques should be gentle yet precise—not just about producing cracks. For "text neck" syndrome, he recommended "Eight-Step Tendon-Strengthening Exercises", a fusion of Yijinjing, Baduanjin, and Shi’s therapeutic movements, to enhance daily musculoskeletal health.

    2. Smart Massage for Joint Care

Sun Wuquan highlighted Ding’s Massage as a green, low-carbon therapy for age-related joint degeneration. Using techniques like One-Finger Pushing, it effectively relieves pain. For childhood scoliosis, he emphasized early intervention through massage, traditional exercises, and spinal adjustments, supplemented by gait analysis and targeted workouts.

    3. Proctology Tips for Modern Life

Wang Chen shared Gu’s Surgical Therapy’s four keys to preventing hemorrhoids and constipation: balanced diet, exercise, healthy habits, and stress relief. He also introduced specialized treatments like medicated threads, traction therapy, and herbal ointments, which excel in post-surgery recovery and inflammation control.

    4. Yijinjing for Weight & Vitality

Yan Weibing demonstrated how Ancient Yijinjing combats sedentary lifestyles by boosting metabolism and correcting posture. His "Three Postures for Office Workers"—simple yet effective—help alleviate fatigue and prevent chronic conditions.

 Conclusion

The event not only delivered practical health knowledge but also showcased the enduring value of ICH in modern wellness. As the launch concluded, Shanghai Health Report pledged to continue bridging ancient wisdom and contemporary health needs, ensuring science-backed, culturally rich guidance for all.  Yewen’s Take

This edition’s brilliance lies in seamlessly merging ICH with modern health practices, reviving ancient techniques for today’s challenges. By addressing spine care, joint pain, weight management, and more, it offered holistic solutions while redefining tradition’s role in urban well-being.
