Shanghai, December 12, 2025 — A heartwarming reunion took place today at the launch ceremony for Renji International Medical’s 20th anniversary new journey. Deya (pseudonym), a Malaysian girl who received a new lease on life at Renji Hospital ten years ago, returned with several international pediatric liver transplant recipients to the place where their lives were saved. Their radiant smiles stand as the most vivid testament to two decades of “Benevolent Skills Healing the World” at Renji Hospital, marking the start of a new chapter.
A Girl’s Hope Sparks a Decade-Long Friendship Bridge
In 2014, three-year-old Deya from Malaysia was critically ill with decompensated cirrhosis due to biliary atresia. After failed attempts to find treatment locally, hope emerged over 3,000 kilometers away at Renji Hospital, Shanghai. Professor Xia Qiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Renji Hospital, led his team to successfully perform a living donor liver transplant. The story, widely covered by Malaysian media, brought new hope to countless families of children with end-stage liver disease, prompting many to travel to Shanghai for treatment.
Deya’s story was not an isolated case but the opening of a door. Since then, Renji Hospital’s pediatric liver transplant team has successfully treated over 60 children from countries including Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mongolia. Believing in “teaching how to fish rather than giving a fish,” Professor Xia Qiang led three missions to the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), selflessly sharing expertise and training 16 medical staff free of charge. In 2019, his team guided UMMC to complete Malaysia’s first two pediatric living donor liver transplants, transforming Renji’s role from “blood transfusion” to “hematopoiesis” and planting Chinese solutions and Renji experience locally.

Two Decades of Dedication: From Technology Export to Systemic Co-Building
The reunion of Deya and her friends encapsulates the journey of Renji International Medical over the past 20 years. From initially treating critically ill children to establishing a multidisciplinary international medical service system covering liver surgery, reproductive medicine, gastroenterology, and rheumatology, all accredited by DNV International; from singular medical treatments to enabling direct billing with 35 global insurance providers and building a cross-border insurance platform; from expert visits to long-term strategic partnerships with international charities and cross-border medical platforms—Renji’s international medical path has evolved from “technology export” to “shared medical service systems.”
At today’s event, new collaborations and initiatives charted the course ahead. Renji Hospital signed a new memorandum of cooperation with Malaysian charity Nadi Permata Malaysia to benefit more families; the “International Cloud Clinic,” jointly developed with multinational corporations such as Switzerland’s Geberit, Novartis, and Sika, was officially unveiled, launching a new model of digital, exclusive health management for employees and clients. The global launch of the English version of Renji’s Internet Hospital, alongside the initiation of DNV international accreditation, signals that Renji’s online international medical services have entered a new stage of standardization and globalization.

Integrating into Urban Strategy, Building a Global Health Community
Standing at this 20-year milestone, with Deya’s story as a touchstone, Renji International Medical’s journey reflects the evolution of Chinese medicine from integrating with the world to contributing globally, actively practicing the vision of “building a global community of health for all.” Set against Shanghai’s ambition to become an international medical center, Renji has transformed its top-tier specialty expertise into accessible international medical services.
In his address, Xia Qiang reaffirmed Renji’s commitment to its founding principles of “Benevolent Heart, Benevolent Skills, Healing the World, Benefiting the Masses.” He pledged to deepen cross-border cooperation, optimize the international medical service platform, and build a more influential global medical brand—contributing to Shanghai’s development as a globally influential health science and innovation center and bringing the hope of life to more patients worldwide.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Lu Meng, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, praised Renji Hospital’s outstanding achievements in international healthcare. Mr. Mohd Shahafeez Bin Shaharis, Consul General of Malaysia in Shanghai, witnessed the new fruits of friendship exemplified by Deya’s story. Mou Shan, Party Secretary of Renji Hospital, along with Deputy Presidents Zhang Jidong, Wang Zheng, and Sun Yun, joined representatives from business insurance, cross-border platforms, international accreditation bodies, and distinguished guests to celebrate and look ahead to the next golden decade of Renji International Medical.
