Yesterday afternoon, the 2025 “Yi Jian Kang” (One Health) Foundation Award Ceremony was held at the Fenglin Campus of Fudan University Shanghai Medical College. The 13-year journey of the Foundation serves as a microcosm of Fudan Shanghai Medical College’s drive to innovate medical education and research while actively serving the national “Healthy China” strategy. Functioning continuously as a “seed planter” and a “catalyst,” the Foundation has propelled the “One Health” concept from an academic consensus into educational practice and research innovation, contributing significantly to the nation’s health goals.

Since its inception in 2013 by Academician Wen Yumei and Professor Ning Shoubao, the Foundation has encouraged more peers to dedicate themselves to the promotion and practice of “One Health.” It supports innovative teaching, scientific research, and talent cultivation to better serve the health of the general population. Over the past 13 years, the Foundation has raised 12.322 million RMB in donations, awarded 359 individuals, and supported three research projects in geriatrics. It actively encourages breaking down disciplinary barriers to foster integrated innovation across medicine, public health, environmental science, and other fields.

Academician Wen Yumei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and founder of the Foundation, further elaborated on the profound connotations and enduring value of the “One Health” concept. She likened this cause to a relay race, emphasizing the need to “pass the baton to the younger generation.” In her address, she encouraged young scholars to be bold in crossing disciplinary boundaries and to translate this concept into innovative research, effective teaching, and accessible health services, placing high hopes on the faculty and students.

Jin Li, President of Fudan University and Dean of Shanghai Medical College (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), paid tribute to Academician Wen Yumei via video message. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the donors and extended warm congratulations to the award winners. He noted that over more than a decade, the “One Health” Foundation has remained committed to its core mission: discovering and cultivating interdisciplinary talent and inspiring cross-sector innovation. This has injected continuous momentum into the practice and development of the “One Health” philosophy. He affirmed that the University and the Medical College will continue to build an open, collaborative academic ecosystem, improve interdisciplinary educational mechanisms, and vigorously support the expansion of “One Health” in education, research, and social services.

Yuan Zhenghong, Director of the Foundation’s Management Committee, summarized the Foundation’s work in 2025, reviewing its measures and achievements in talent cultivation and research support. The ceremony announced the winners of the 2025 “One Health Outstanding Undergraduate Award,” “Outgraduate Graduate Award,” “Outstanding Teacher Award,” “Pathogen Biology Major Freshman Award,” and “Outstanding Paper Award.” Representatives of the winning teachers and students from various colleges and hospitals shared their practices and reflections under the guidance of the “One Health” philosophy.

“This honor reinforces my belief that pharmaceutical innovation is often born at the boundaries of interdisciplinary integration. It stems from the complete chain connecting the bedside to the laboratory, and ultimately to society,” said Li Yiyang, an undergraduate award winner from the School of Pharmacy. She shared how clinical volunteering inspired her research—developing a targeted treatment system for renal failure—and led her to rural areas to conduct medication science education. Chen Zhongxing, a graduate award winner from the Eye and ENT Hospital, structured his speech around “Gratitude, Insight, and Inspiration.” He recounted his journey from clinical practice to scientific research, focusing on solving drug delivery challenges in ophthalmology and striving for the translation of research results. Li Yixin, a freshman award winner in Pathogen Biology, shared her original aspiration and determination to devote herself to pathogen research, inspired by Academician Wen Yumei.

Representing the Outstanding Paper Award team, Dr. Ruan Qiaoling, Associate Chief Physician at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Huashan Hospital, reviewed the legacy of passing the torch—from being an award-winning student ten years ago to now mentoring students who win awards. Using research on pemphigus complicated by infection as an example, she illustrated the practice of “One Health” in solving complex clinical problems by integrating perspectives from infectious diseases, dermatology, and nutrition.

Chen Yingyao, a Professor at the School of Public Health and a Teacher Award winner, approached the topic from a macro perspective of health policy and global health. He introduced his team’s systematic practices in building international cooperation networks, promoting evidence-based decision-making, and cultivating global health talent. He interpreted the profound significance of “One Health” as both a mindset and an actionable framework.

Their stories—spanning from micro-mechanisms to macro-systems, and from research exploration to educational practice—vividly demonstrate the deep understanding and diverse, innovative inheritance of the “One Health” concept among different disciplines and generations at Fudan Shanghai Medical College.

Following the awards ceremony, the “One Health Lecture” commenced. Zhou Jian, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Zhongshan Hospital, reviewed his academic and professional history at the college. Drawing on the deep expertise of the school, hospital, and his own team, he used liver cancer prevention and treatment as a case study. He elaborated on how to build a comprehensive “integrated” liver cancer prevention and control system covering the full disease cycle—by integrating early screening, precise surgery, comprehensive treatment, and basic research translation. His presentation provided a model for practicing the “One Health” philosophy in the field of major diseases.
