Five-year-old Gloria, a Chinese-American girl, has had a sebaceous gland naevus on her forehead, a condition that has always worried her family back in China. Through her grandmother’s online research, the family discovered the expertise of Dr. Deng Dan and her dermatology team at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. With the help of online platforms for consultations and the hospital’s international patient services, they were able to easily communicate about Gloria's condition and schedule her surgery. Professional bilingual support throughout the process ensured that her father, who does not speak Chinese, could fully understand every step, eliminating any language barriers.
In March 2025, Gloria travelled back to China with her father to undergo her first surgery. The precision of the procedure and the excellent recovery results brought great relief to the family. Recently, Gloria returned to the hospital for a second procedure. The international patient services department had coordinated all necessary tests in advance, and with Dr. Deng Dan’s precise pre-surgery assessments and minimally invasive techniques, the second surgery was a success, completely removing the lesion. From the initial online consultation to post-operative recovery guidance, the bilingual support and streamlined services made the whole process smooth and reassuring for this international family.

Andy, a young patient from Singapore, had a yellow-red skin lesion on his left scalp since birth. Local doctors had previously suggested observation. As Andy grew older, a new swelling developed on the surface of the lesion, which caused great concern for his parents. By chance, Andy’s mother came across Dr. Deng Dan’s online video explaining cases of sebaceous gland naevus in children. The authoritative explanation and positive post-operative outcomes convinced her to bring her child to Shanghai for treatment.
Through Dr. Deng Dan’s online consultation services, they quickly completed their medical history submission, initial assessment, and surgery appointment. Andy was diagnosed with sebaceous gland naevus on his left scalp. Dr. Deng’s team devised a personalised surgical plan, removing most of the lesion while carefully protecting the health of his scalp. During the post-surgery check-up, Andy was relaxed and his parents, who had been anxious, finally felt relieved. The seamless green channel, warm international services, and precise treatment plan made their journey across the ocean filled with warmth and trust.

Chenchen, a Chinese-Canadian girl, had been dealing with congenital facial skin lesions for many years and had not found a satisfactory treatment plan in Canada. After researching online, her mother was drawn to Dr. Deng Dan, who came highly recommended by many parents for her precise stitching techniques, friendly approach, and professional post-surgery care. After an online consultation, Chenchen’s mother was confident in their choice and flew with her daughter to Shanghai for treatment.
Dr. Deng Dan’s team carefully arranged Chenchen’s consultation and surgery. The recovery went smoothly, and the young girl was finally free from her long-standing concerns. Grateful for the care she received, Chenchen gave Dr. Deng a hand-painted watercolour picture: a large "beauty" and a smaller one – representing Dr. Deng and her transformed self.
International Recognition and Trust
During the Christmas and summer holidays, Dr. Deng Dan’s clinic and wards are often filled with international families. Many parents take advantage of the school holidays to bring their children to Shanghai for skin-related surgeries. In recent years, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center’s International Patient Services Department has successfully treated nearly 10,000 foreign children, with nearly 2,000 international visits in 2025 alone. As one of the hospital’s speciality services, the dermatology department has provided care for more than 100 foreign children, receiving widespread praise for its warm service and efficient procedures.
